About Polio

WHY WE ARE DOING THIS?

Rotary spearheaded the campaign at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries, paralysing and even killing children. Today, the number of cases is down by 99.9%.

There are only two countries left in the world where the children have the crippling disease called polio. These are Pakistan and Afghanistan. This month has seen Nigeria declared polio free by the World Health Organisation showing that our perseverance is winning.

Together, we step up to the world’s biggest challenges and after three decades, Rotary is on the brink of ending polio now and forever.

LIKE SMALLPOX – ONCE THIS DISEASE HAS BEEN ERADICATED IT WILL NEVER RETURN
SO THE AIM IS SIMPLE – LET’S RID THE WORLD OF POLIO

Inspired in part by Rotary’s volunteer commitment and fundraising success, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched in 1988.

This remarkable partnership includes Rotary, World Health Organization, UNICEF, the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and more recently, Gavi the Vaccine Alliance.

Our aim is to raise funds towards the End Polio Now campaign to eradicate this disease forever ….  and have fun at the same time.

For each entry we ask you for a minimum donation of £5 or local currency equivalent which can be paid through our donation page with either PayPal or a debit/credit card…

WHAT IS POLIO?

Most British doctors and nurses working today will never have treated a case of polio. In fact, only a few people under 50 in the UK will know anything about the devastating effects of this disease and therefore do not understand the need to eradicate it completely.

Once we reach zero cases it is gone from the world it will never come back. Please watch this video made in 2016 but still relevant today.

WHO IS AFFECTED?

Unless we eradicate polio, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 new cases could occur around the world each year. In the past few years, only two countries have reported cases of polio caused by the wild virus, but no child anywhere is safe until we’ve vaccinated every child.

Our virtual Dog Show is our fun way to help with this campaign so you can do your bit by participating with your dog or simply donating to End Polio Now
